Motor-CAD Lab Speed Increase

Motor-CAD Lab now has multithreading capability, allowing the software to make use of multiple CPU threads when building the saturation and loss models. For a typical traction application, this results in a speed increase of up to 4 times when building the Lab model.

For example, the model build for a machine with multiple rotor skew slices and limited symmetry can now be built in under 8 minutes compared to almost 30 minutes, whereas for models with a high symmetry factor the full FEA map model build can now be completed in under 3 minutes.

Once the saturation and loss model has been built, machine performance can be calculated accurately over the full torque/speed envelope within seconds. This allows rapid and accurate analysis of the machine performance over the entire operational envelope. The user can quickly create efficiency maps, study the thermally constrained operational envelope, and analyse performance over complex driving cycles.

Motor-CAD Lab is available for the brushless permanent magnet, synchronous reluctance, synchronous and induction machine types.

Summer Interns

MDL welcomes three interns for the Summer.

Alice Staton and William Hill are from University of Warwick where they have recently completed the first year of the MEng programme. Alice has a Women in Engineering Scholarship from the University. They are working on a Motor-CAD to Matlab Simulink link to run thermal simulations.

Robert Muckle-Jones is from St Andrews University where he is part way through a BSc in Computer Science. He already has a MEng in Mechanical Engineering. He is working on visualisation of hairpin windings in Motor-CAD.
