Dr. Dave Staton


Dave founded Motor Design Ltd. (MDL) in 1998 with a focus on the development of thermal analysis software for electrical machines. MDL develop Motor-CAD software that helps simplify the thermal analysis of electric motors and generators. It is the most widely used software for the thermal analysis of electric machines worldwide.

Dave did his PhD in computer aided design of electric motors at University of Sheffield in the mid 1980’s. Since then he has worked on electric motors, and in particular, the development of motor design software at Thorn EMI, the SPEED Laboratory at University of Glasgow and Control Techniques (part of Emerson Electric).

Mircea is the Head of Engineering at Motor Design, Ltd. He has more than thirty years of engineering experience. Earlier in his career, he was with Helsinki University of Technology (now Aalto University) in Finland and with the SPEED Lab at University of Glasgow, UK. Mircea has published more than one hundred papers and his publications have received three IEEE best paper awards. His consultancy contributions for industry are incorporated in many state-of-the-art products.

Current major projects include electrical machines and drives for hybrid/electrical vehicles, and formula-e racing cars. An IEEE Fellow, Mircea is the Past Chair of the IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS) Electrical Machines Committee and IAS Prominent Lecturer.

Dougie Hawkins

Dougie Hawkins

Dougie graduated in 1991 with a BEng Degree in Electrical Engineering (1st class honours) from University of Glasgow. He has developed software control systems for railway traction, marine and telecom products at GEC Alstom, BAE systems and Teleca Communications.

Dougie has been the Head of Software Development at Motor Design Ltd since 2005, developing Motor-CAD modelling tools for the electromagnetic and thermal performance of rotating machines.

(Head of Technology)

James received an MEng degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Warwick in 2009 and in 2014 received an Engineering Doctorate from the University of Bristol in the design of brushless permanent magnet machines for automotive traction.

He is the Head of Technology at Motor Design Ltd where he mainly works on automotive R&D projects and software development with large industrial partners.
