Optimization of an IPM Traction Motor considering the Electric Drive Unit System Requirements – Dr. Melanie Michon (Head of Engineering at MDL) and Cleef Thackwell (Lead Electromagnetic Design Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover)

A multi-physics optimization workflow is presented for an automotive traction motor. The optimization includes electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical requirements typically seen in this application. EDU system level parameters are included in the optimization to assess the effect of the transmission and inverter on the electrical machine performance. This optimization workflow enables insight into the electric machine performance information across a wide design space. It provides a powerful tool to engineers and managers to visualize and quantify system level trade-offs on efficiency, cost and mass to be made between the inverter, E-machine and transmission. This is accomplished through the use of surrogate models, CAE simulation and design space parametrization.
